Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska

June 21-25, 2018 We arrived at the Golden Nugget RV Park in the afternoon and backed into our tight spot, pretty typical for Alaskan campgrounds. We do have a little bit of grass 🙂 We went grocery shopping and enjoyed a full-sized grocery store (Safeway). Richard took my bike in to get new tires since my back tire was flat and of course he paid a visit to Home Depot. On Saturday we went to downtown Anchorage to check out…

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve

June 2018 This park definitely makes my top 5! We loved it. With over 13 million acres this is the largest national park (six times the size of Yellowstone NP!). There are only two roads that provide park access, Nabesna Road and McCarthy Road. We did a day trip down each of these roads. Our first entrance was on 42-mile Nabesna Road, starting from the Hart D Ranch in the town of Slana where we camped for two nights. This…

Drive from Tok to Anchorage: Slana & Chitina (Wrangell St.Elias NP)

Drive from Tok to Anchorage: Slana & Chitina (Wrangell St.Elias NP)

June 17-20, 2018 We pulled out of Tok with a clean motor home and excited about seeing our next national park, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. There are only two roads leading into the park, one near Slana and one near Chitina so that is where we were headed. You can read all about the national park at the National Parks tab and don’t miss this one, it was terrific! This was some of the roughest road we had traveled so…

Drive to Tok, Alaska

Drive to Tok, Alaska

June 14-16, 2018 We pulled out of Skagway, heading for Tok on a windy and rainy day. It was foggy on our drive out so unfortunately I couldn’t photograph the “moon-like” landscape. We got stopped at customs at the Canadian border and after being asked all of the usual questions about firearms, knives, and any other weapons, we were asked to park and go inside while they searched the RV. I guess they didn’t like our answers?!? When we got…

Skagway, Alaska – We Made It!

Skagway, Alaska – We Made It!

June 11-13, 2018 We had an easy two hour day to go the rest of the way to Skagway. Part of the road was dirt and gravel but the scenery was beautiful and we breezed right through customs. When we arrived in Skagway we pulled into the Garden City RV Park, just outside of the city center. We had planned to stay at Pullen Creek RV Park in town, which has much more character and is near the boat docks,…

Drive to Skagway – Day 8 – Tagish, Yukon

Drive to Skagway – Day 8 – Tagish, Yukon

June 10, 2018 Today we left our new friends behind and headed west on the Alaskan Highway and then onto the Tagish Scenic Road towards Skagway. Unfortunately we only saw one moose today and no other animals. After yesterday’s bounty that was disappointing. We didn’t really have a planned stopping point for the night so we fueled up in Teslin at the Yukon Motel and Lakeshore RV Resort and then kept on going. To get to Teslin we crossed this…

Drive to Skagway, Alaska – Day 7 – Lake Watson, Yukon

Drive to Skagway, Alaska – Day 7 – Lake Watson, Yukon

June 9, 2018 Today we drove 330 miles from Fort Nelson to Lake Watson, Yukon. We didn’t really plan to make it all the way to Lake Watson but we were having such a nice drive we didn’t want to stop! We saw 9 different animals today: 7 bears, including a tiny cub, a moose, buffalo, caribou, stone sheep, including a baby, a porcupine and a deer. Wow!! This is what it’s all about. Here are some of our pictures….

Drive to Skagway, Alaska – Day 6 – Fort Nelson

Drive to Skagway, Alaska – Day 6 – Fort Nelson

June 8, 2018 Today we continued north on the Alaskan Highway about 300 miles from Dawson Creek to Fort Nelson, B.C.  The drive was pretty uneventful (no animal sightings). We fueled up in Taylor, just north of Dawson Creek, at a tiny gas station without any problems. We pulled into the Triple G Hideaway Campground in Fort Nelson at around 4:00 and met up with our new friends from Dawson Creek. After dinner our next door neighbor, Matt from Connecticut,…

Drive to Skagway, Alaska – Days 4 & 5 – Dawson Creek

Drive to Skagway, Alaska – Days 4 & 5 – Dawson Creek

June 6-7, 2018 Today we drove about 6 hours from Quesnel to Dawson Creek, B.C. On the way we drove through the town of Chetwynd, about an hour south of Dawson Creek, that is famous for its chainsaw sculptures. We could see about a dozen sculptures displayed in town as we drove by but we didn’t see a place to park the big rig so we kept on driving. Next time we come this way we’ll plan a stop there….

Drive to Skagway, Alaska – Day 2 & 3 – Quesnel

Drive to Skagway, Alaska – Day 2 & 3 – Quesnel

June 5-6, 2018 On day 2 we drove about 200 miles to Quesnel, B.C., about an hour south of Prince George, on the Cariboo Highway. Quesnel began as a supply town for miners during the Cariboo gold rush in the 1860’s. The town’s sign is the world’s largest gold pan. We decided to camp for the next two nights at Robert’s Roost RV Park so that we could see some of the sights around Quesnel. We camped on Dragon Lake…
