Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park

April 2018

This was perhaps our shortest visit to a national park ever, due to the fact that most of the roads were still closed because of the snow cover. Fortunately this was not a surprise since I had checked ahead and knew that we could only go a short way into the park before we would have to turn around. Of course we went to the park anyway, since we were only about 15 miles away, and it was well worth it to see Lassen Peak, at 10,457′, up close as well as Manzanita Lake.

We entered the park at the Manzanita Lake entrance station, where there was a picnic area and campground. We ate our picnic lunch and then went as far into the park as we could (10 miles). We had to turn around at this spot where you could only proceed on snowshoes.

We went back to the Manzanita Lake area and got a closer look at Reflection Lake and Manzanita Lake. We couldn’t walk all the way around Manzanita Lake because of the snow and overflowing water. Richard was very disappointed (not).

That was about it for Lassen Volcanic National Park. This is really a park to visit in the summer but sometimes the roads don’t open until mid-summer. Last year it was July 26!

When we left the national park we headed north to drive by Mount Shasta, at 14,162′. It is so beautiful and covered in snow! Then we headed back south to Shingletown.
