Last Week in the Maritimes-New Brunswick

Last Week in the Maritimes-New Brunswick

July 25-August 4, 2023

Thankfully we made the trip from Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia into New Brunswick without incident. Apparently the flooding over the highway had subsided and the road we were on had reopened. Hallelujah! We did have a bit of stress just before we reached our destination when the gages on the RV dashboard started acting up, showing we had no fuel or DEF (a required additive for all Diesel engines)! Richard tried disconnecting the batteries and then hooking them back up and that solved the problem. Whew!

Once we arrived at Ponderosa Pines Campground in Cape Hopewell, New Brunswick I knew we had saved some of the best times for last. Our pull-in spot faced the Bay of Fundy and was just steps away from the 1.7 km trail leading to The Rocks at Cape Hopewell Provincial Park.

I hiked the trail leading to the park and bought my $14 ticket to view the rocks. It was beautiful and truly amazing to walk among the looming rocks at the bottom of the ocean floor at low tide! I did go back at low tide and indeed the water was up about 40′ covering most of the rocks…so amazing.

Our next stop was a visit to Fundy National Park located near the cute town of Alma. We stayed at the Headquarters Campground which was very convenient to town and sights in the park. We spent the next couple of days exploring Fundy National Park and the surrounding area. There were covered bridges, waterfalls, boats at low tide and the beautiful Cape Enrage.

Our final stop in New Brunswick was St. Andrews by the Sea near the Maine border. I wanted to camp there because it looked like a beautiful spot on the water plus I read about a cool bike ride that you could take across a sand bar at low tide to Minister’s Island. St. Andrews turned out to be an amazingly cute resort town and all the activities were within walking/biking distance from our campground at Oceanfront Camping by Kiwanis.

We did get to ride our bikes to Minister’s Island and it was a blast! So fun to bike across the ocean floor at low tide and tour the 50-room mansion built by Sir William Van Horne, former President of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The island was originally inhabited by a minister in the 1800’s in a tiny house and that is how it got its name. I also walked into town to explore the spectacular 18-acre St. Andrews Botanic Garden and take some pictures of the sights. I loved the two photos of the mural painted on one of the buildings in town. You can see the windows that they painted around. This is a great destination vacation spot and only a few hours from Bangor, Maine!

After our 3 days in St. Andrews it was time to head back to Maine. We had a fantastic time on our 7-week tour through the Maritimes and Newfoundland. I would highly recommend visiting this beautiful part of Canada if you ever get the chance!
