Cruising Canada’s National Parks

Cruising Canada’s National Parks

July 30-August 7, 2022 After leaving the Alaskan Highway in British Columbia we set a course for central Canada, planning to stop at three different national parks over the next 1,000 miles in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The Saskatchewan countryside was very beautiful and the roads, mostly just two lanes, were in pretty good condition. We especially enjoyed the farmland with its bright crop of yellow Canola spread over hundreds of miles. The seeds are used to make Canola oil. We…

Leaving Alaska-Journey to the End of the Alaskan Highway

Leaving Alaska-Journey to the End of the Alaskan Highway

July 24-29, 2022 After three weeks in Alaska we spent our last night in Tok and then began our 3-week journey across Canada to Maine. Since the roads on our drive into Alaska on the Alaskan Highway were so bad, especially the last two days, we decided to take another route from Tok on the Klondike Loop through Dawson City, Yukon. We have avoided this route in the past because it takes you through Chicken, Alaska on the Taylor Highway,…

Family Time in Alaska

Family Time in Alaska

July 14-23, 2022 At last the day had arrived when family would join us in Alaska! The group included my sisters, Linda & Lisa, Linda’s son and his family, Tyler, Kristen, Owen (11) & Morgan (8) and Kristen’s parents, John and Catrin. They arrived tired and bleary-eyed on the evening of the 14th and checked into a hotel for the night. Linda & Lisa came home to the RV with us. The next day Tyler and John picked up their…

On the Road to Anchorage: Denali NP and Katmai NP

On the Road to Anchorage: Denali NP and Katmai NP

July 9-14, 2022 We left Fairbanks heading for Denali National Park. The drive was pleasant and we got to the Denali RV Park and Hotel by early afternoon. To really see Denali National Park you need to book a trip on one of the park bus tours since no cars are allowed further than 15 miles into the park. I did learn that bikes we allowed beyond the 15 mile mark and since the weather was pretty good (not raining)…

Drive into the Wilderness: Coldfoot & Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay

Drive into the Wilderness: Coldfoot & Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay

July 1-8, 2022 On July 1 we made our way from Tok, Alaska to Fairbanks and settled into our spot at Rivers Edge RV Park on the Chena River. Fairbanks was shrouded in smoke from the many (~144) fires burning in Alaska this summer due to lack of rain and unusually warm temperatures. You’ll see later on our drive just how much smoke there is! For those of you following along I finally got my bike breaks fixed at Goldstream…

Nine Days to Alaska

Nine Days to Alaska

June 22-30, 2022 We had nine days to drive 1,600 miles from Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada to Tok, Alaska, starting out on the Yellowhead Highway (16), then on to the Cassiar Highway (37) and finally the Alaskan Highway (1 & 2). Our first stop was a 2-day layover at Prince George, a relatively large town of around 75,000 people. The Yellowhead Highway was fine and we spotted a few bears along the road which was fun. In Prince…

Icefields Parkway (Hwy 93) to Jasper

Icefields Parkway (Hwy 93) to Jasper

June 19-21, 2022 The Icefields Parkway, a 232 km drive north linking Lake Louise in Banff National Park to Jasper National Park, is one of the most beautiful drives that we have ever done. It’s mostly a two lane road but traffic is light and the scenery of the rocky mountains and icefields is breathtaking. Because we were traveling in the RV with the truck in tow we were not able to make any stops but here are some of…

Canada at Last – Banff National Park

Canada at Last – Banff National Park

June 10-18, 2022 We’ve been trying to get into Canada for two years and we finally made it! We had an uneventful crossing at Roosville, British Columbia, only taking about 20 minutes to get through customs. I had completed the online ArriveCan form ahead of time for Richard and me, uploading our passport and Covid vaccination records, so it went very smoothly. Yeah! Our goal that first day in Canada was to make it to Fort Steele, just 100 kilometers…

Friends at Flathead Lake, Montana

Friends at Flathead Lake, Montana

June 6-9, 2022 We met Rick and Barb during our first year on the road in 2018, on our way to Alaska via California. We clicked right away and met up with them again at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon in 2019. This time we decided to rendezvous at Flathead Lake in Polson MT and what a beautiful spot it was. On our first night together we shared a great meal and a beautiful rainbow over the lake. We…

More of Montana: Dillon and Missoula

More of Montana: Dillon and Missoula

June 2-5, 2022 On June 2nd we exited Yellowstone National Park through the West Entrance on Hwy 287. This was a beautiful drive through the mountains (no high mountain passes!) taking us through Virginia City (which we visited on a prior trip) and on to Dillon MT where we spent two nights at the Countryside RV Park. The main reason that I wanted to visit Dillion was to go to one of America’s best-preserved ghost towns in Bannack State Park….
